Deutsche Soldatenfriedhof La Cambe, Normandy

The largest German War Cemetery in Normandy, containing 21,245 German military casualties. The cemetery was designed by architect Robert Tischler. Situated cose to the US objective of Omaha Beach, the cemetery originally held both German and American casualties. There are 5 other German military cemeteries in Normandy which collectively hold around another 56,000 casualties.

 

The central burial mound is the final resting place of 296 casualties, 207 unidentified and 89 identified casualties. 

After the War, the American authorities relocated their fallen to the cemetery at St. LAurent-sur-Mer approximately 15 km away. German casualties buried there were exhuimed and reinterred at La Cambe. 

 

Notable graves:

 

Hauptsturmbannführer (SS Captain) Michael Wittman - famous SS Panzer Commander. Originally buried in a makeshift battlefield grave, the bodies of Wittman and his crew were discovered in 1983 and were reinterred at La Cambe.

Sturmbannführer Adolf "Otto" Diekman - who ordered the masacre at Oradour-sur-Glane and was killed in action before he was court-martialled for the atrocity. 

Generalmajor SIgismund-Helmut von Dawans, killed in an RAF raid on the HQ of Panzergruppe West. 
Hauptmann (Captain) Herbert Hupprtz, Luftwaffe fighter pilot killed on 8 June.
